Like any mother and son, Chen Xiatian and mother Zhou Lu had a good relationship. They spent happy days together not until Chen was diagnosed with brain tumor at age five and Zhou Lu,34 contracted chronic kidney disease. For two years, Chen battled for brain cancer, went blind and half-paralyzed. At the same time, Zhou was suffering from her kidney disease. As the kid was dying, he told her mother, “I want to save your life.” He wanted to donate his kidney to his mother. Nothing can be more heartbreaking than this.
At two, Chen was a normal happy boy who is inseparable from her mother.
But a huge change occurred when Chen got brain cancer and suffered for two years. Yet, his mother tries to make things normal just like how she reads a book to him before bedtime.
Despite the signs of recovery, Chen’s situation got worse. Hence, he insisted of helping his mother by donating his kidney to her. He knew he could not live longer.
The two grew weaker over the years. Grandma Lu Yuanxiu, 57, was the first person that the doctors consulted to make an immediate decision. We know how hard this is for them.
Zhou suffered more from her chronic kidney disease and badly needed the transplant. And so they did.
Zhou didn’t want to lose her little prince but the kid could no longer bear the pain any longer. Hence, she accepted the help Chen was offering. In tears she said that if her son was to die her only consolation was that part of him would live on in her. The doctors confirmed that the tissue matched perfectly and the kidney transplant was possible.
The boy passed away at age 7 on April 2 and was immediately brought to the operating room for the transplant.
Zhou received the kidney of her son. But she isn’t the only one who was saved by the boy. Another person got his kidney while his liver was donated too.
After the operation, Zhou was sad about the loss of his son but just lingered on the thought that a part of Chen lives in her forever.
Everyone hoped that Zhou could live a normal life after everything that happened. And we think she did.
Chen was a hero. He saved not just one but three lives. The second kidney was given to a 21 year old girl while his liver went to a 27 year old man. Three lives were saved after a successful transplant. Three people were able to live a normal life because of this little boy.
Hospital spokesman Yi Tai said: ‘The medical team held a brief moment of prayer and silence for the poor child before the transplant, I think it’s fair to say there were very few dry eyes.
